Abus
From the family-owned basement blacksmith shop to ABUS, a globally successful security company
In 1924 in Volmarstein near Wetter an der Ruhr, August Bremicker and his sons achieved a breakthrough for the family’s future. They brought a padlock onto the market that was groundbreaking – the “Iron Rock”. Today ABUS is a global company that is run by the fourth and fifth generation of the family.
At that time, the family began developing and producing padlocks in the forge in the basement of their home. With strong competition: There were many such forges in Volmarstein and the surrounding area at that time. But August Bremicker and his sons were so successful that the company quickly grew to 30 employees. So in 1929 the family business bought a production facility on Hegestrasse in Volmarstein, which is still in operation today. At the end of the 1930s, ABUS already had around 300 employees. After the war, August Bremicker’s sons dared to make a bold new start, which continues to set the tone for the company’s success to this day.
ABUS has set standards in terms of safety over the course of its almost 100-year company history. Safe, reliable, stable – that’s what the name ABUS stands for. Be it a lock for the shed or bike, bicycle helmets for a family or international cycling teams like Movistar.
ABUS Sustainability
Sustainability is very relevant to us and we focus on the three areas of environment, economy and social issues, which are anchored in our actions as a continuous process. Future generations will benefit from the measures we take in these three areas.
As a manufacturing company, we have an increased consumption of primary energy and raw materials. When purchasing electricity, we therefore attach great importance to having more than 50% renewable energy in the energy mix. This contributes to our goal of consistently improving energy use. One of ABUS’ largest production sites has received several awards for its outstanding waste avoidance rate of 99%. The longevity, quality and functionality of our solutions are important to us, combined with our mission “to make life a little safer”.
Tireless efforts, innovative ideas, expertise and know-how in development, production and sales are what makes this family business which is managed according to Christian principles the success it is four generations later.
